Well, "redesigning" is a bit of an understatement -- "replacing" is more
appropriate.

Actually the Workplace OS, as it will be called, already exists; it is
called Mach or OSF/1... :-)

IBM have clearly stated that the next generation of OS they will have
will be Mach based, and will have Posix, MSDOS (these already exist and
have been demonstrated), OS/2, MS Windows, System 7, and AIX 3.x
personality modules. Apparently the System 7 module is also already in
existence, and seems to work (at least on the PowerPC).

Well, I think that PCBSD will then become the legendary BSDSS for Mach
