Try using bash as the shell to run it under.

Instead of
#!/bin/sh
as the first line of the script try
#!/bin/bash
(Assuming that you have bash installed in /bin)

There are still some problems with ash in regards to controlling ttys
and such which still haven't been resolved. I am still having problems
with shell scripts running out of cron, but those scripts run fine when
I used bash.
