I just got FreeBSD installed and it appears to be working. Now I need
some help. I want to install a modem on the (dos) com1 port, but I am
unsure how to procced. Could someone lend a hand? By the way, the system
does recognize the com port on boot as sio0. However I can not find the
/dev file for sio0. Also what file will need to be changed in order for
   this connection to work.

This will be seen as /dev/tty00. You can get the kermit package from
freebsd.cdrom.com:~ftp/pub/FreeBSD/packages/kermit_bin.tgz (please read
the README file in that directory for information on installing packages!)
and then simply do:

stty -f /dev/tty00 clocal
kermit -l /dev/tty00 -b <some baud rate>
kermit> c

You're connected!

If you feel like reading the man page for `tip', you can also connect
without having to fetch kermit first, but as I never use tip (being a
die-hard kermit user) I couldn't really tell you how to set that up!
