 He wanted SNMP (simple network management protocol), not SMTP.

 I compiled the server (with a small change) and clients of the CMU SNMP
 and SMP (crudely referred to as SNMP II) both from lancaster.andrew.cmu.edu
 (128.2.13.21) in 386bsd 0.1 and it still runs with FreeBSD 1.0.
