More correctly, you need to define a disktab entry for your drive if
there isn't one you want to use. It is important to realize that you
are not bound by those entries. If one looks good though, using it
will probably be o.k.

Right. Then you use fsck to check the raw partitions, which should
come up with no complaints.

It's a bit more complicated, but it allows enormous flexibility.
The MS-DOS programs do the same thing, but they group more of it.
Spiffier interface is all, really.
