Thanks Mark Tinguely and Charles Hannum for your helps
and sorry about the delay in acknowledgement, I've been
without News until today.

I've tried both way, boot as single user and Cntl-C
after fsck. I could get into Unix but when trying to
edit file rc.local, an error message came back saying
"cannot create var/tmp/filename". A "mount" command
showed that the filesystem that I mounted was read only.
( I did a "mount -u /dev/wd0a /usr" earlier) So I tried
to make it writable by using "w" option unsuccessfully.
Bottom line is I'm still open to the Net's wisdom of how
to edit this file.

Many thanks,
kb
