I've managed to solve the problem (at least it works for me) there were
two problems that I had. The one with the auto answering was due to the
fact that I had a group line and the silly PTT didnt tell me that they
had configured the phone computer to pick lines sequentially and since I
had only one modem connected to the first line. It only called that
occassionally so the problem was that the modem was simply not being
called. The second problem regarding the garbage on the screen (after
receiving a connection) had to do with configuring the modem. You need
to play around with the s registers and all the other registers to achive
a configuration that will work. Unfortunately not all modems are identical
in their configuration parameters, so you will probably have to experiment.
I have a DynaLink 14.4kbit modem so in case you have that I can mail you
the configuration that works for me.

Hope this helps and thanks again for all the answers I got,
