Greg,
  I think you'll find if you pick up either the latest bootwd (patched) or
grabbed the diff's or uuencode we posted to this group, your problems will
go away. This fix was for a problem where you couln't boot off the H.D. at
all, but the bug that was corrected was that the boot code was NOT actually
reading the H.D. status register when waiting for drive ready status. This
would explain your problem as well.
