Hello.

We will be installing Linux and NetBSD, and are in the process of
purchasing the hardware to do so (a 486 PC compat. machine)

The following applies to both operating systems:

a) Is there support for the Adaptec 2742 EISA SCSI card (as the
1742A has been discontinued and is hard to get); If not, can
someone recommend another EISA card that is supported, and
behaves as the 1742A ? (ie. handles the floppies and does
   bus mastering)

*** Edit: I just read the newsgroup. Since Adaptec has chosen to
be uncooperative with support information, I choose not to buy
their products. Can someone recommend an EISA bus mastering SCSI
card, supported by these systems? We'd prefer it to be able to
handle the floppies too, as mentioned above.

b) Can someone recommend an EISA Ethernet card that is supported?
The list in the NetBSD files seems to contain older cards. At
present, low cost is more important than performance.

c) Opinions/experiences on different hardware for a) and b) is
   always welcome.

Any help with the above will be much appreciated.
