The distributed start-up files assume that you will be running `routed'
(a very bad idea, but some people insist on it).  If the routers
connected to your network don't support RIP, `routed's protocol, then
it won't do anything, with the symptoms you have seen.

The proper solution is to add a line like the one above to your
/etc/netstart file to set up a correct default route.

IPng will have router discovery and you won't have to worry about it
any more.
