Well-

I took Mike Murphy's suggestion, and gritted my teeth and
re-installed the system, and answered cylinder 0 as the starting
cylinder instead of the default of 1.  Now I can boot directly
from the hard drive, and don't need the floppy anymore.

Thank you all who responded to my posts.  I appreciate the
help and insight that I've received from your replies.
And, of course, special thanks to Mike Murphy and Adam David.
