I suggest you replace the Bourne Shell that comes with 386BSD 0.1 with
GNU's Bash.

No, I don't know if it will easily compile under 386BSD 0.1. However I have
a friend that bought BSDI and the shell that came with it had the same
problems that you are describing. I told him to replace his shell with Bash
and after he did he had no problems with the CNews shell scripts.
