I've seen a similar problem with Xyplex terminal servers.  Basically,
what happens is that the client telnet negotiates to send the terminal
type or size or speed or something similar, the server telnet sends
the code meaning ``so tell me about it'', and the client never
responds with anything.

The solution is to upgrade to a newer version of client telnet.
