OK, I've read up on both of these products, and am duly impressed
by the effort donated by the contributors to making Free UNIX
on the PC platform a reality. (if only my employer would give them
free PowerPC boxes to port over, hint, hint).

Here are my requirements for a UNIX system, and am wondering if these
two products fit the bill:

Source code compatibility (somewhat) with SunOS 4.1.3 (from the UNIX perspective).
Motif (a biggie in my book), is Motif available for XFree86??
SLIP capability (Is SLIP available??).

Eventually, a C++ compiler (hopefully for free).
and all the X distribution tools (like xmkmf makedepend, etc..)

I am in the process of buying a high-end PC (486DX2-66) with a good
Graphics controller (looks like an ATI SVGA VESA is my only choice)
250 Mb tape drive, CDROM,and 16Mb of RAM, w 256K of cache, and 16 bit
soundblaster card..

I'd like to re-create the UNIX environment I have at work,
which is a Sun 3/80 with Motif/X (yes, I know it's such a dog,
it would bark, but does not have any sound capability).

The final requirement I'd like to add is the ability to reboot and
run Mess-Windows with Mess-DOS for all those cheap adventure games
you can pick up at CompUSA for less than $30

There is a reason behind all this madness..

I'd like to use this machine to learn to prgram in the X
environment with C++i, I'd also like to develop an app for the soundblaster
card (to eventually give to you-all).

I'd also like to use it to work at home on work related projects,
and connect in to work thru SLIP.

Can anybody with experience in this assist me in this endeavor?

I have over 6 years of embedded data communications experience,
a little with 80286 (although it's been quite a while with Intel parts).
