Allright,

To clear things up a bit: I HAVE followed the instructions
on installing FreeBSD. I made the floppies, ran 'em once
to prepare the hard disk, ran 'em again to install a kernel
on the hard disk (via "copy"), and now I cannot get it to
boot from the hard drive (a SCSI disk connected to a correctly
terminated Adaptec 1542B controller).

HOWEVER-
In conversing with Adam David, we found that I could boot
up the floppy disk to the first prompt (where it asks you
what you want to boot from). Normally you boot from
fd(0,a)/386bsd. When I specify hd(0,a)/386bsd, it works FINE.
It even finished the installation by installing the CPOI floppy.
I'm FTPing the rest of the binarydist right now.

In other words, I am currently required to boot from the floppy
disk and specify hd(0,a)/386bsd as the boot kernel.

Why won't it boot from the hard disk? I've got the CMOS set
so that there are no disk drives, and I have the IDE controller
disabled as well.
