i don't know much about the netbsd serial drivers, but the freebsd sio-driver
are !great!, i'm running 6 serial-ports (16550AFN, some of them bidirectional);
null problemo. 57600 bps with about 5% cpu-load (486/33).

btw.: it's worthwhile to upgrade ;-}
