Part of the performance problem may not lie with the card but with
the X server and  386bsd. If the STB VLB24 is an S3 805, then
they are  probably not mapping the entire video ram into memory due to
limitation in the *BSD twins. Supposedly, this limitation of mapping
a high physical address,e.g., 0x7c000000, to a user process has been
fixed in 386bsd 0.2.

On the linux front, the are capable of mapping the entire video ram
of an S3 805 card to the user process;whether this made into the 
XFree86-2.0, I don't know nor I care :-)
