The RZ mystery has been solved thanks to Andrew Gillham.

Apparently, it is a feature of Crosstalk to do this.

I have attempted to reproduce text feom the Crosstalk manual below. I
totally missed this text, so I have no excuse.

"For the receiving systetm, AutoStart determines whether the file transfer is
automatic (under control of the sending system) and what alerts the system
to receive a file. The default, Both, should be used in most cases; the
system will begin receiving a file when it detects the charcters RZ followed
by a CR, or a ZMODEM block of data. You can restrict this with the RZ setting
(receive file only after receiving the RZ/CR sequence) or Block (receive
only when setecting a ZMODEM block). The setting None requires you to select
Receive from the File Transfer screen (Alt-P) to receive a file."

I have set AutoStart to Block only. This appears to do the job.

I guess the options are necessary for those systems that require rz to be
typed.

OK, now the date problem still remains, actually more annoying, as it is
transparent and more difficult to remedy.
