The last  version is  sendmail  8.6.2 and has  drop-in Makefile/patches for
BSDI, Linux  and  FreeBSD (well not   yet, I sent 'em  to  Allman so  he'll
incorporate them in the near future).

It integrates very well into FreeBSD's /usr/src tree.

But there is a bug into  FreeBSD's m4 (UCB one  I think) so  one has to get
GNU m4 to generate .cf files.
