I've used pcomm with 386bsd and with FreeBSD. It does have
some problems with its use of curses and screen redraws but I don't
think this is your problem. I had garbage shown on the screen as well.
You need to play around with your modem init sequences and line settings
from within pcomm and maybe power cycle your modem and check that your
cables are seated properly. You might also be stuck using 7E1 only
to get good connections. I did get it to connect fairly well though I
would still occasionally get a bad connection and garbage on the screen.
If that happened, I would hang up and try again.

My recommedation, if you have Xwindows running, is for you to
get Seyon. It compiles pretty much out of the box and works far better
and is much nicer than pcomm will ever be. I am using it right now to
type this reply :)
