As clipped from the INSTALL_NOTES for ***> NetBSD-0.8 <******:
been performed. NetBSD is currently 100% binary compatible
with 386BSD, so programs like XFree86 which are already
available for 386BSD will install and run on NetBSD as easily
    as on 386BSD.

On 18-Jun-93 the a.out magic number changes were committed to
    ****> NetBSD-current <****.

These changes are in effect in NetBSD-0.9 which is the current offering.

So, Amancio is right. His NetBSD-0.8 generated binaries do work on 386bsd.
And Nate is right, the default for NetBSD-0.9 is incompatable with 386bsd.
