This seems to be a common problem with one revision of WD8013's.  My
roommates card has the same problem under i386 Mach 2.5 and 386bsd (I
haven't tried it since there was only 386bsd).  We never got a solution.
 You might see if you can pawn your card off on someone else and get a
newer SMC card (they now make all of the WD8013's) or a 3com card (I
have a 3c503 and have had very good luck with it), or wait and see if
anyone else offers a solution.  If they do let me know...

BTW, his card was bought about 2 years ago, maybe a little more.
