Sounds exactly like the bug which infested my X setup (386bsd, patch
0.2.4, XFree86 1.3 plus drawing and ATI bug fixes) until this afternoon.
I'm new at this, so I asked a local Xpert, who suggested I might have a
battle between xdm and getty for my console. I changed /etc/ttys and
all is now well.

That is essentially what mine said too. I changed "on" to "off" and the
problem went away.
