Tom Goldthorpe (tagoldth@spine.med.utoronto.ca)  has pointed
out a better solution.

The lines (in a .mailrc) in question is:

if r
 hold *
endif

Tom pointed out the set command can be used to produce the desired
behavior,  that is, replace the above with:

set hold

I'd like to thank Tom for spending the time to investigate this.

I do note that the analogous  "set preserve"  does not cause the
desired behavior, nor does it issue any message...
