[ all references to "BSD" changed to "[Free]BSD" as deemed appropriate;
  these are FreeBSD install disks, and, as noted, have been tested with
  nothing else as of this posting. -- cgd ]

New [Free]BSD install disks are available now via anonymous FTP:
freebsd.cdrom.com: ~ftp/pub/FreeBSD/FreeBSD-1.0-GAMMA/floppies.930913

These should solve most problems people have had in installing FreeBSD.
In addition, existing DOS partitions are recognized, and by default,
[Free]BSD is installed after them. Overall, installing [Free]BSD should
now be much easier.

The new install disks should work for installing NetBSD as well, though
this has not been tested yet (please let us know!).

As ever:
MAKE A BACK-UP OF YOUR HARD DISK BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO INSTALL BSD!!
