  I can't say I remember any major bugs when I used tar other than it being
a real pain to get to tar in the first place...!

  Actually what would have saved my day was if 

  a) I knew cpio before I started out
  b) had tar 
  c) if install had an option in which you could tell it to load to an
     already mounted disk, ie. "install /mnt" or something like that which
     would then skip all questions and hog over the whole stuff. Which if
     I'm not mistaken would be nothing more than one or two lines of C code.

  Also, I think you should have shipped the whole distribution to someone who
had never seen it before and ask him to a) install using default and b) using
the manual way. It would have saved a lot of people trouble I think.

  Perhaps the bug in cat would have been found then...?

  Anyway, many thanks for releasing the thing. It was totally unexpected. B-)
