Summary: Restoring disklabel after format doesn't work
Keywords: HARDDISK INSTALLATION DISKLABEL FILESYSTEM FORMAT

I apologize if this is a question that has already been answered recently,
but I was on vacation and haven't followed this newsgroup for a while.

I'm running a 386BSD system with PK 2.4 and three HDs. Because of random
read/write failures of the two IDE disks I had to low-level format them
and right now I'm trying to restore my BSD filesystems on the newly
formated disks.
I'm using exactly the same configuration and disktab-file which I had before
formating the disks, and the step where I'm stuck is the installation of
the disklabel.
I know that before making the new filesystem I have to write the disklabel
onto the partition, and I've done it before, when I installed the system
the first time months ago.
The command I'm using is (I've also tried other options):

	disklabel -w -r /dev/rwd1d disk-2

and get the error message "disklabel: invalid argument" and shortly after
that the kernel writes the following warning message to the console:
"log: wd1 cannot find label (no disklabel)".

All attempts to do something with the disk fail. From a look into the source
code it seems that the opening of the device fails at some point, altho the
disk is correctly configured in the kernel (which is shown by dmesg,
and the kernel hasn't been changed since I last used this disk before
formatting it).
I know that it is sometimes probelmatic to low-level format IDE disks, but
I used a special software from Seagate and the DOS-partitions, which are on
the same disk work fine, so the disk itself seems to be ok.

I don't have a clue about what I'm doing wrong. Any suggestions?

Any help is greatly appreciated - thanks in advance jan
