   Re-Bzzzt!

The MNP protocol has been reimplemented by multiple vendors. It is the
   specific implementation which is propritary.

By my read of the CCITT V.42 spec, the "alternate proceedure" in Annex A
is exactly MNP-4.

It is entirely possible (since I do it every day) to run V.42bis over
MNP-4. MNP-4 provides the same functionality as LAP-M. (i.e. sequenced
reliable delivery with flow control)
