Bad memory.  If the machine is new and still under warranty,
report that you are getting NMI errors (NMI can pop up under
MS-DOG as well so tech support might even believe you) and be
assertive in expressing that you *expect* them to replace your
shoddy memory with some real stuff.

I had the same problem.  Through swapping simms I was able to
spot one clear offender which was replaced.  However, I still got
NMI errors periodically.  I got complained and got all the simms
replaced (free of charge) and everything has worked perfectly since.

With good memory, most if not all of your bizarre problems (many
of which I experienced as well) will go away.
