The following is a request for help from a new-to-Unix user, so
strap on your seat belts, as we're in for a bumpy ride!

Can anybody tell me why I keep getting an error, when I am
trying to boot my machine (386DX-40 w/8Mb RAM, AMI BIOS, SigmaVGA II
(ET-4000 Chipset), IDE I/O w/2 serial ports (disabled), 1 Parallel
port (enabled), Joystick port (disabled), Serial card w/2 16550's
and a WDAC2340 - 340Mb IDE hard drive & 1.44Mb Floppy drive).

I am using NetBSD 0.8, and the 386BSD 0.1 Kernel Copy disc (although
I've tried the 0.8a loader as well, but no luck either.

I get the error "mount: not found", and then it goes on to say
something about "read only..."

I've got the drive partitioned with the /usr directory on wd0e, and
the root on wd0a (all NetBSD, no DOS or OS/2).

Usually, I get that "NMI port 61 a0, port 70 ff" message... Sometimes
I noticed I got a "Bus error".

I've tried to yank the Serial board, with the 16550's out, and it
doesn't make much difference. I've actually tried using different
motherboards, video cards, etc.. and I still end up with problems.

Sometimes, after about literally 20 reboots, it will "fix itself",
and allow me to log on, but if I go to shut down the system I have
to go through the whole process again (and yes, I did type sync
three times, and halt after typing in "shutdown now")...

------------

ALSO: I tried to re-load the software, on a different drive, (same
make and model - WDAC2340), and I first put the Kernel copy disk in
the drive, and when it says to boot to another disk, I put the
Install1.FS disk (raw written), into the drive, and press any key, and
it says something like "panic: init died -- preparing to save 8Mb to
device 1...", and then reboots... I tried downloading the files
and re-creating boot disks, and even tried to copy the newest kernel
from the disk to the drive, but nothing works...

-------------

Well, enough ranting and raving... I'd really like to save the files
on wd0e, because I spent several hours ftp'ing6 to various sites while
it was directly connected to the net, and I was able to download about
60-80Mb of source code, and other useful stuff, and I'm looking forward
to playing with it... so I'd rather not have to start from scratch at 14.4!

Sorry to take up the bandwidth with such stupid questions, but I've been trying
for the last 3 days (18 hours / day) to get this thing working right, and
since I work in a computer store, I'm able to get my hands on all of the
hardware I need to test it out... I just don't know what is causing all
of these errors, or more importantly, how to fix 'em! H E L P!!!

Thanks in advance!!
 Eric

p.s. If someone wants to have me call them back for an explanation, rather
than typing in a reply, I'd be happy to do that, anywhere in the world!
