I am using (well, just getting set up) a BocaBoard BB1008 8-port
card. This is, effectively, 8 16550A's (in two chips, 4 each).
The only real problem that I see with this card (and its 4-port
little brother) is that it does not support all of the modem lines.
Its missing RI, DSR, DTR, and DCD. None of these are important
for a locally attached terminal (which is all that I plan to use
it with). They do sell a 16-port card (BB2016) that has all of
these lines for each port. It looks like the sio.c driver will
support the card w/o too much fuss (minor changes to the probe
routine required, though).

I paid $169 for the BB1008. I believe the BB2016 was around $329.
(This was at Altex Electronics, I have not shopped around for these
and so don't know who else carries them.)

I am also using a AST 4-port card (a clone, actually) with 16550As
installed for my modems. (Had to cut out the 16450s that came with
it and install sockets to support the 16550As.)
