This is a fix for the problem early Cs had with sub-standard external cables.
The sub-standard cables are those whose signal impedance is too low. The fix
basically slows down a control signal (ACK?) to allow the external bus to
stabilise before the data is read from the bus...

You need to look for this fix ( two resistors & three wires ) if you want
to use external cable with the minimum of pain and hastle...
