Hi, I see noone else has followed up to this one.  Maybe it's common
knowledge, but just in case: the above is essentially correct, as I
have been informed via several direct replies.  There appears to be a
small twist to this -- there are two 1740's -- 1740 and 1740A.  The
former is older and the microcode on that type of controller can be 
downloaded via software, whereas this cannot be done on the 1740A.
