I would sell the little tiny diamond card. There are probably may in
doz land that would probably buy.

At any rate if you have an S3 805 VLB card it runs just about as fast an S3 801
and it certains the S3 805 actually runs slower. I know I have tested
S3 805 cards --- not of course Diamond.

Lets assume that you decide to buy BSD386. The actual purchase will nullify any
financial gains. For instance, you can get a fast S3 801 Actix or
Orchid F1280 which will match quite nice in performance against the Diamond
S3 805.

Also, once you get past 100k xstones unless you are doing CAD work
or drawing thousands of lines, pixels, etc., you are not going
to see the performance gain.

I called Actix on their 800 number and got a few distributors. A
place called WinExpress (800 859-8500) sells the GraphicsEngine 32 for
$159 and the Ultra for $249. I don't expect I'll do better than that.

---------
Actix Ultra S3 928
Actix GraphiEngine32 S3 801

XS3 does work with Actix's S3 801 or S3 928. I have them running on
our systems. The Actix Ultra S3 928 is a loaner from Actix :-)

Various VGA manufacturers are co-operating with us. The following
VGA manufacturers have actually loan us S3 based cards and in
certain instances given us invaluable technical assistance:
Actix
ELSA
Number 9
Orchid

For the record, Actix's technical assistance in the early stages of
XS3 was invaluable to bring forth the server to you.

I suggest that we support those that support us!!!

You see we are not talking about just about Diamond but about supporting
those who support us. I can't tell you what to buy or not to buy but
if it was up to companies such as Diamond we wouldn't not be enjoying
graphics workstation performance in our PD PC-unix systems.

If you do decide to buy a card to use with a free X server,
please let the VGA manufacturerer know. Such acts do help us a lot!

I spent the evening looking into the problem of not being able to compile
the ibm8514 code with the optimizer. Following are the diff's to fix this
problem. With -O -finline-functions -fstrength-reduce -fomit-frame-pointer
and -m486, performance in some areas is dramatically improved. The pixel test
in x11perf, for instance, improves by 40% to 540000 pixels/second. The xbench
results with optimization look like this:

(AH: Resolution 1024x768 @65mhz on a fast 486 DX2 66Mhz)
TOTAL 512796 lineStones
TOTAL 74884 fillStones
TOTAL 53293 blitStones
TOTAL 7701944 arcStones
TOTAL 194218 textStones
TOTAL 147973 complexStones
TOTAL 118630 xStones

In this benchmark, it looks like arcStones benefited the most.
