   I had the same problem running 0.1BSD with patch-level 2.2 installed.
 Everything looked like it was operating correctly, but it would lock 
 completely up just before firing off the window manager (ie. your left
 staring at a blank screen).  I just recently installed the 2.3 patch kit
 and everything works fine, so it appears that something critical to X is 
 missing in the 2.2 patchkit.

 If you have a fairly standard kernel configuration, try using one of the
 kernel's supplied with the X distribution.  At least that will tell you 
 if it's a problem with your kernel or your Xconfig file.
