In fact, the UNIX trademark *is* legally sanctioned and recognized
in most countries through the appropriate national authorities. Most, but
not Japan. (I seem to recall a legal fight in Japan involving a boom box
carrying the UNIX label.)

According to "UNIX(R) SYSTEM TRADEMARK GUIDELINES" published some
years back by AT&T:

"The following notice, rather than a trademark notice, should be
used in Japan as a footnote in association with the first
	appearance of the trademark:

		"Developed and Licensed by AT&T"

No material should be used in Japan which carries any of the
trademark notices discusse above. Any existing trademark
identification must be expunged from all material before
	being used in Japan."
