Are you sure you have a full standard centronics cable? With *all*
lines connected and proper shielding? I also thought I'd have one
(it worked wonderful with my Epson LQ, under DOS and 386bsd), until I 
connected a LaserJet 4L to my system. It didn't properly respond
(the LJ 4L can reply to the computer via return status lines with 
a proprietary protocol), and I found that the cable was missing 2 lines
and two others incorrectly connected. There seem to be several
types of suspicious cables out there; I had one that at least worked
under normal circumstances; your's might be connected wrong in a 
different way. There might be probably a short between ground and 
a not frequently used status line.
