Subject: how do I connect a modem and get tip to work?

I just installed NetBSD 0.8 and everything seems to be going ok -- but now
I want to set up communication stuff.

I want to hook a modem up to com1 and I'd also like to hook a null modem
cable up to com2 to another pc that I have.

I read the man pages for tip, /etc/remote, /etc/phones and I can't
seem to get things going. Is there some other file I need to edit? My
modem is set up to not have DTR (or one of those lines, I don't have
my modem here) the line forced active. Is this wrong?

Is /dev/com1 hooked up to com port 1? If so, can I just do something
like

% echo "atdt1234" > /dev/com1

and have that work?

Any clues much appreciated. If someone has a simple set up, with a modem
hooked up to a com port and nothing else really going on could you
just email me the contents of all the files you had to edit? What switch
settings are needed for the modem? Does it matter?
