Okay.  I managed to get things worked out here on my own.
My problem was that I didn't pay any attention to previous
posts about this problem.

Solution:
Get the new boot block files for the /usr/mdec directory.
(I didn't realize that I needed those files. )
Although I did still have a problem with disklabel.
Originally I was using 'disklabel -w wd1 <type>' format
but that doesn't work.  I had to use 'disklabel -w -r wd1 <type>'.
Go figure.

So the moral of this story is to keep up with recent News!
My apologies go out to the bandwidth conservationists.
