A followup to my original note: I have since fallen all the way back
to the original 0.1 release of 386BSD and reapplied from scratch all
patches up through and including patchkit 0.2.4. And I installed
XFree86-1.3, with pccons configured in the kernel.

All seems well again.

Looks like I can wait a while for codrv. Thanks to those who emailed
me with suggestions.
