I'm using a "pk-0.2.4" system with an archive viper tape drive
and adaptec 1542c controller. Is it not possible to append to a
tape or am I doing something wrong? When using tar to append to
an archive, it winds to the end of the archive and then complains
that it can't write a filemark. Using mt to write a filemark on
the tape gives the same error.

Any hints or tips would be appreciated.
