Ah, this is your problem, and probably the main problem of many others.
The accelerated drivers are not yet compatible with codrv. The 8514 and S3
servers branched from the XFree86 tree some time before codrv was released.
Integration of these servers is scheduled for XFree86-2.0 (the next version,
no release date yet). So the only hardware that is compatible now is the one
which runs with the servers labelled XFree86-1.3. Sorry. I have the disk
space to compile any kind of server, but have not the hardware to test
anything other than SVGAs. I do not want to interfere in the development
process of the "official" XFree86 accel group, but if some of the second
source xserver developers are interested and would contact me (pointing me
to a stable set of sources, not diffs), I would have a look at the code and
see what to do.

There are several changes necessary to put in codrv stuff into the xserver,
it is not only a matter of some changing of the input channel (/dev/vga->/dev/kbd,
for instance). If you would like to do something in this area, or contribute
or test code, you should get into contact with the XFree86 team and subscribe
on the beta list (send a request to be added to xfree86@physics.su.oz.au;
this is not an automatic server, so be polite).

I doubt so, I had the effect of non root login without 'secure' long ago.

You mean 1.2 server with 1.3 binaries and libs, yes?
