Summary: War (huh), what is it good for (absolutely nothing)
Keywords: religious wars, 386bsd, netbsd

Ok guys, all these sub-flame wars are not really interesting. So we have
a product here (BSD), and people want to do their own thing with it, especially
since 4.4BSD will be the last release.

A few decided "Why not make a buck out of it" (BSD/386 from BSDI). Well, I guess
we all want to make money.

Then there's Bill Jolitz, who wants to continue BSD as a research project,
renewing it on the 386 (in the spirit of the original BSD I guess, which
introduced new things to Unix). Having seen work that he was part of
take a direction that he did not like, he wants to largely be in control
of the project (as opposed to Linux, which is more of an "Everybody let's
hack' thing (which is working out just fine)). Can't blame him.

Also, we have the latest spin-off (the comparison with a soap does come
to mind here ;-)) : NetBSD. This one seems to be initiated by people
who were not satisfied by the incorporation of patches/additions to 386bsd,
and probably had different goals. They seem more interested in
taking 386bsd 0.1, and stabilizing & improving it. Fine.

I don't really see why this all has to result in wars. Maybe a separate
NetBsd group has to be created? Whatever. Personally, I think Bill Jolitz'
goal is the most interesting: renewing BSD, taking out some ancient stuff,
incorporate new mechanisms. That is why I am interested to see what
386bsd 0.2 (1.0 ?) has to offer. Other people will be interested
in other things. That's no reason to start seeing insinuations in
every other posted line, is it?
