I have been having the same problem with my machine on one specific program.
I have been attempting to get a recent release of nethack working with
X support, but have been having problems with it failing.
The program does not core dump but instead reports some internal error which
I was unable to locate and then exits.

A copy of the program made before the failure has a _different checksum_
(using cksum) than the version that now will not work. The file
sizes are the same but the contents differ somehow.

In an attempt to stop the program from being corrupted I removed all
write access to the file (chmod -w nethack) but the binary has still
become corrupt from time to time.

The binary does not automatically become corrupt, Only on occasion does the
binary become corrupt. I was under the impression this was a problem with
the filesystem but am not certain.

My system is a 486DX33 64k cache Adaptec 1542 (no IDE), Multifunction card.
