I had this problem too, but it went away when I turned off my external cache
(I have a 486/DX33 with 256KB). I further pinned it down to working if I only
used 128 KB but failing if I had 256 KB. I was also getting bus errors, and
semi-random crashes in OS/2 and WinDoze.

I have a 1990 AMI BIOS and my motherboard maker says I should get a newer version
because of my localbus video card, though we'll see if that does it...

I have a DTC 2290 EISA hard disk and a Connter CP30254 IDE drive.

Does anything in my configuration ring a bell with others having similar problems?

The building I was doing was the making of kernels.
