I have a USRobotics Sportster 14.4k modem, and using it under 386BSD
0.1 that I've just installed a week ago. I need help on how to
access to the /dev/com1 device, since I've had a lot of problems
trying to open it.

At first, I've edited the /etc/remote file, and then I tried to run
'tip com1'. I got a message: "lock open: No such file or directory
                               all ports busy"
When I looked at the modem, it has only one LED on (CTS). My friend
suggested me to do a "cat /etc/passwd >/dev/com1" to see if the port
is working. But, it didn't dump it there, and then after awhile I
got another message: "... dreamz /386bsd: com0 : silo overflow".
I tried to exit, but it failed to respond. I had to reboot then.

I just wanted to test the com1 port to see if it works so that I could
use UUCP and UUCICO to call out. I've found something from my
reference book that I have to change the external DIP switch in my
modem in order to work under UNIX. (I use my modem in DOS before)
I changed it from what it suggested...

I rebooted the system, and I've found that my modem now had three LEDs
on - CTS, RTS, and DTR. I then ran "tip com1", and I still got the
same message. When I tried to run "cat /etc/passwd >/dev/com1", the
modem's LED (RD and SD) blinked for awhile, then stopped and returned
to the prompt. It seemed that the modem did respond. I typed "stty
</dev/com1" and I saw that the speed was 9600. It's correct... nothing
was wrong.

So, why I couldn't run "tip com1"? Is there any problem with /dev/com1
or any missing file that to open the port? Or, do I need to change
any DIP switch at the modem? Has anyone got USRobotics Sportster modem
works under 386BSD? Please post your /etc/remote here if possible.
Please, please do let me know. I really need help!

Thank you very much. Any help would be highly appreciated.
