                          REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (1)

This is a request for discussion on the creation of a newsgroup to provide
support for users of the Sony NEWS workstations, including the 68k-, R3000-
and R4000-based models (and any others made by Sony). Hardware and software
information would hopefully be provided, allowing owners of this unfortunately
under-supported platform access to online assistance and discussion.

Group Name:

  comp.sys.sony.news

Status:

  unmoderated

Further information:

Sony has been making Unix-based workstations for several years, but their
acceptance in the US has been limited. There are, however, a substantial
number of users, particularly those of older models, who have been left
largely without any free support. There is at least one newgroup in the
fj hierarchy, but that is unfortunately not carried by most nntp servers
in the US. Hopefully such a newsgroup in comp.sys would allow a greater
number of users access to the much needed assistance.

Voting:

A CFV will be posted one month from the first RFD. (per standard
  Usenet procedure)

Proposed By:

  mike@hopper.acs.virginia.edu (mike@ecosys.drdr.virginia.edu)
(note email addresses, the posting mechanism is flawed on this machine)
