I installed Xfree86 tonight, but not without hassles
I now have it at the stage where it starts up, but it isn't exactly
running in a satisfactory manner: The screen seems to be stretched
out to three or four times its rightful width (ie: on a 1024x768
screen, I see about 256x768 resolution! Arrgh!)
The missing 3/4 of the image are off the right-hand edge of the monitor.
I'm sure that X really thinks its using the right resolution, but the
monitor has other ideas.
I've been through the XConfig.Notes file and calculated my own dot-clock
values, and obtained the following results:
"1024x768" 51 1024 1188 1492 1656 768 771 779 810
My video card is a Tseng Labs 16.7M colour localbus card with 1Mb
RAM. The monitor is a Compucon non-interlaced multisync VGA monitor
(Maximum video bandwidth: 70MHz; Horizontal sync: 30KHz to 50KHz;
Vertical sync: 50Hz to 90Hz).
I've tried 800x600 and 640x480 modes, but end up with even worse results
(even larger pixels than with 1024x768!)
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
