Subject: Help! disklabeling a Micropolis ESDI drive

I am thoroughly confused. I have tried to label my new Micropolis
1664-7 ESDI drive and can't seem to get past the following error
message:

    disklabel: /dev/rwd1d: Invalid argument

the following message is also logged (to the console):

wd1: cannot find label (no disk label)

Now, granted, there is not _yet_ a label on this disk. That's what
I am attempting to accomplish! The command that I have executed is:

    disklabel -w -r wd1 M16647B

(the M16647B happens to be what I named the disktab entry for this
    drive)

Note some history: I had another ESDI drive on this system (a Maxtor
XT4380E) that this one is to replace. Also, disk 0 is another Maxtor
XT4380E.

I truely don't understand what is going on here. From what I have read,
the -r flag is supposed to allow one to create a label on a previously
unlabelled disk. (This has worked for me before, just yesterday on a
different system with IDE drives on it, as a matter of fact). I can't
help but feel that I have missed something terribly obvious here. Any
pointers or help would be greatly appreciated. What dumb thing am I
doing (or neglecting to do) that would make this so difficult?

Thanks in advance,
