Thanks to everyone helping on that problem. It was indeed the csh patch 00013
from the patchkit.

I installed patchkit 0.2.3 upon a virgin 386bsd-0.1 and it went smooth
from minute 1. No problems, took me an afternoon though on a 486/33/8MB
with IDE and 5MB swap.
